Faridpur Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Project is one of the four Damien Foundation projects working in the field of TB Control and Leprosy Elimination Program. The activities of Damien Foundation Bangladesh were extended in greater Faridpur district in October 2001 and full geographical coverage was achieved by the mid of 2003. The project covers five districts with a population of about 6.8 million namely Faridpur, Gopalgonj, Madaripur, Shariatpur & Rajbari. A total of 38 combined TB & Leprosy clinics are integrated within 24 Upazila Health Complexes (UHC), 3 Chest Disease Clinics (CDC), 3 District Sadar Hospitals and a DOT corner in Faridpur Medical College Hospital along with 7 peripheral laboratories / 2nd Microscopy centers.
The Damien Foundation has built an effective network at the community level through participation of Cured TB patients along with other different stakeholders to ensure participation of all care providers through public- private mix (PPM). Mobilizing cured TB patients and making them further responsible to find out TB suspects from their own community has proven to be one of the most effective strategies in TB case detection. DF is systematically involving all diagnosed TB cases to the fight against TB, because of their unique experience and knowledge of the disease. Former TB patients have important roles to play as peers, treatment supporters and as advocates in the communities. Good networking systems have been established for maintaining DOT at community level. There are 2,578 community TB providers (mainly Village Doctors) who are providing TB treatment support at their community.
